This publication aggregates organizational and leadership research and presents a new model for NPO alignment. The model is presented as a pyramid, partially because metaphors are powerful learning and teaching tools for system analysis. The NPO Alignment Pyramid is presented as having three major levels, each requiring the foundations underneath it in order to be strong and to support those elements above. The bottom—or most fundamental level—is strong board leadership and governance. The second level includes shared responsibilities between the board and staff leadership. The top level includes those elements that fall clearly into the realm of staff leadership responsibility. This model is the foundation for Civicus Consulting Group’s Nonprofit Alignment Audit, which assesses mission and strategy alignment with other elements of the organization.
